In trauma centers, orthopedic surgeons work with neurosurgeons and other specialists in order to address injuries related to trauma. They also often collaborate with vascular surgeons, who address traumatic injuries of large blood vessels that can put the viability of the injured limb at great risk. Orthopedic trauma specialists also work closely with infectious disease specialists, as well as micro-vascular and plastic surgeons, to take care of severe open wounds, which may require soft tissue reconstruction and are prone to infections.
Orthopedic surgeons constantly collaborate with anesthesiologists, who are responsible for your comfort during surgery. Anesthesiologists are also able to place very small catheters near your nerves, to deliver numbing medicine and, therefore, be able to control post-operative pain.
